2 thoughts on “What Retailers/Restaurants Would You Like to See in Greensboro?

  1. What would attract a new business to Greensboro? Could it be the food desert or the 2nd hungriest city thing. Businesses see that and wonder, what am I getting myself into coming to a town like that? I know they do income and market studies but you have to wonder. When you the condition of our city that our so called leaders have gotten us into, I would have to think long and hard about locating in a city like Greensboro with it’s current political and business climate.

The USDA defines what’s considered a food desert as a “low-access community,” at least 500 people and/or at least 33 percent of the census tract’s population must reside more than one mile from a supermarket or large grocery store (for rural census tracts, the distance is more than 10 miles).

You can view the location of food deserts with the USDA Mapping Tool. What this implies is that we need more grocery stores near lower income areas rather than clustered together in high income areas. The issue is disposable income, as retailers tend to prefer areas with high disposable income because the residents in that area have more money to spend on their products.

I’ll take your answer to mean that you’d like to see more grocery stores in the areas identified as food deserts. I’ll do a follow up post on the topic so that I can include images and links. I’m finding the comment section kind of clunky to do that.

Comment are welcome. Let's hear your thoughts!
